Unions welcome minimum wage increase

Unions have welcomed increases in the statutory minimum wage, which take effect from today (2nd April).
Many workers on minimum wage are on the frontline of the coronavirus pandemic, including care staff looking after elderly and vulnerable people in very challenging circumstances, and supermarket staff on the shop floor and working in warehouses, as reported by Retail Gazette.
The statutory rate for over-25s will go up from £8.21 per hour to £8.72, while the national minimum wage for 21-24 year olds will go up from £7.70 to £8.20 per hour.

Millions of ‘minimum wage heroes’ set for 6.2% pay rise

Almost 3 million of Britain’s lowest-paid workers are set for a pay rise, after the biggest ever hike in the legal minimum wage.
The wage floor, now rebranded the ‘national living wage,’ increased on Wednesday from £8.21 to £8.72 an hour for workers aged 25 and over.
Union leaders welcomed the pay boost for “minimum wage heroes,” including many working in vital roles in healthcare and supermarkets during the coronavirus lockdown.
But two leading think tanks had urged the government to delay the hike, warning against increasing costs for employers at a time of enormous economic upheaval.

Millions to get £930 a year pay rise this week as Minimum Wage goes up

The 6.2 per cent increase represents the biggest cash rise ever since the Minimum Wage came into force in 1999.
Younger workers will also get wage boosts of between 4.6 and 6.5 per cent, with the rate for 21-24 year olds going up by 6.5 per cent from £7.70 to £8.20 an hour.
First announced by former Chancellor Sajid Javid in December, the changes were then confirmed by his replacer Rishi Sunak in the Budget earlier this month.
It will be a welcome bank balance boost to around two million people who earn it.

Government confirms minimum wage increase to go ahead on April 1

AN INCREASE in the minimum wage will go ahead on April 1, the government confirmed today – despite a think tank’s opposition to the measure in the light of the coronavirus outbreak.
The right-leaning Institute for Fiscal Studies had questioned whether a rise in the statutory minimum hourly rate from £8.21 to £8.72 “still makes sense” given the chaos caused by Covid-19.
But even after the increase the minimum wage will remain below the Living Wage Foundation’s target of £10.75 in London and £9.30 elsewhere — figures based on the minimum a worker needs to get by.
