Letter to UAW Retirees

Please post to your networks to get out the vote in the UAW election going on NOW! Friends – and friends of friends – may be UAW members. And if you are a UAW retiree, please sign at the Action Network site below.

UAW RETIREES CAN PLAY A DECISIVE ROLE IN THE UPCOMING DIRECT ELECTIONS FOR UAW NATIONAL AND REGIONAL OFFICERS…

The upcoming UAW election may set a new course for the UAW, the entire U.S. Labor Movement, and beyond. For the first time, it’s “One Member, One Vote” and, after the corruption scandals, there is an opportunity to change leadership. With 580,000 retirees, we can have a decisive impact. We encourage you to help make history!

We are a group of UAW retirees who have held elective office in our locals and/or been union reform activists in various solidarity campaigns. We came together in a joint México Solidarity Project/Labor Notes committee to strengthen the ties between auto workers in the US, Canada, and México, and have been working with the new grassroots union, SINTTIA, at GM in Silao, México, which recently won its own fight to oust a corrupt top-down union.

The slate of candidates under the banner, UAW Members United, stands for a more democratic, internationalist, and militant union, and will fight concessions, corruption, wage & benefit tiers, and for increases in pensions for retirees. Their platform includes fighting for raises for retirees (uawmembers.org/platform). The nominees are:

President – Shawn Fain , UAW 1166

Secretary-Treasurer – Margaret Mock, UAW 140

Vice-President – Mike Booth, UAW 1700

Vice-President – Richard Boyer, UAW 140

Director, Region 1 – LaShawn English, UAW 1264

Director Region 9 – Daniel Vicente, UAW 644

Director Region 9A – Brandon Mancilla, UAW 5118

…UNLESS THE ADMINISTRATION CAUCUS ILLEGALLY INTERFERES!

In UAW Region 1, election campaign rules were violated when UAW Members United election fliers (see it here) were confiscated from Local 909 retirees attending their monthly Chapter meeting. Frank Hammer, former Local President and Chairman, and SINTTIA supporter, filed a complaint (here) with the Monitor.

A FEDERAL MONITOR IS OVERSEEING THE ELECTIONS

Voting will be by mail-in ballot. Retirees can vote for all positions. Ballots will be mailed to your postal address of record beginning October 17, 2022, and will be due by November 28, 2022. For more information about the election procedures, see Notice of 2022 UAW Election.

To ensure that you receive a ballot package, you must provide your updated mailing and e-mail address information to your Local Union as soon as possible and advise your fellow members to do the same.

We now have the right to vote – Let’s use it!
